Susan Brown is a contemporary painter whose distinctive work explores architecture, city life, landscape and the patterns found within the world around us. Born in Yorkshire, she studied at Leeds Polytechnic, graduating with a BA (Hons) in Three Dimensional Design in 1979.
Her background in design has had a lasting influence on her painting, giving her a particularly strong understanding of structure, composition and spatial relationships. Working predominantly in watercolour and acrylic, Susan is perhaps best known for her atmospheric architectural paintings and cityscapes, in which familiar buildings and urban settings are transformed through carefully considered colour, light and perspective.
Alongside her architectural subjects, Susan has produced landscape, still life and more abstracted work, often exploring texture, pattern and the underlying structures found in both natural and man-made environments. This breadth of subject matter is united by her strong sense of design and an ability to find visual interest in both grand architecture and everyday surroundings.
Susan has exhibited widely in the U.K, including in exhibitions associated with the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Watercolour Society and New English Art Club. She has received recognition in a number of major competitions, including the Laing Art Competition, the Hunting Art Prize, the Penrose Purchase Prize and the Singer & Friedlander Sunday Times Watercolour Competition.
Her paintings are held in numerous private and corporate collections, including the Sir George Martin Trust and the Universities of Sheffield and York.
