Heidi Archer

Heidi Archer creates richly textured mixed media paintings inspired by the dramatic meeting of coastline and moorland that surrounds her home. Her work distils the atmosphere of these landscapes into semi-abstract compositions, capturing their changing light & natural rhythms. Painting in oil, acrylic, charcoal and carborundum on canvas board and wood panel, Heidi builds each piece through a process of layering, sanding, scoring and reworking the surface. Areas of paint are gradually revealed and obscured, allowing colour, texture and the natural character of the support to become an integral part of the finished work. This intuitive approach creates paintings with remarkable depth, movement and a tactile quality that echoes the weathered surfaces of the Devon landscape.

The coast plays a central role in her practice, from working harbours, fishing boats and estuaries to the open sea, while nearby Dartmoor provides a contrasting source of inspiration through its expansive skies, rolling hills and rugged terrain. Birds, river channels, moorland grasses and traces of human activity are simplified into carefully balanced forms, creating compositions that evoke the memory and emotion of a place rather than a literal depiction.

Heidi's distinctive paintings are held in private collections throughout the UK and internationally. Her work has been selected for exhibition at the Society of Women Artists' Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London, and she is recognised for her contemporary interpretation of the South West landscape, combining expressive mark-making with a refined sense of colour and composition.
